TIPU MĀTORO
NATIONAL WALLABY ERADICATION PROGRAMME

Wallabies – A hop, skip and jump away from our happy hunting grounds. Wallabies were introduced to New Zealand from Australia in the late 1800s mainly for hunting.
Fast forward to 2026 and it's estimated that if left unchecked, wallabies could spread to over one third of New Zealand within 50 years, costing millions of dollars each year in damage and forever altering the structure of the forests where people love to hunt, mountain bike and tramp.
Tipu Mātoro is a partnership of central and local government agencies working with iwi, farmers, landowners, researchers, and communities. Together we have a vision for a wallaby-free Aotearoa.
